#JIAM16 Spotlight: Narrator Day with Tanya Eby #LoveAudiobooks

Happy Narrator Day, friends! As part of #JIAM16 (June Is Audiobook Month), I am taking today to spotlight one of the narrators I return to again and again: the brilliant Tanya Eby. If you have not yet had the pleasure of listening to her work, this post is your formal invitation.

Why Tanya Eby

I came to Tanya Eby’s work the way I think a lot of listeners do: by following a recommendation from another blogger and being immediately, completely sold. There is something about her voice that feels like a friend telling you a really good story over a long lunch. Intelligent, warm, observant, and quietly funny. She does not push. She does not perform. She just lives inside the story and brings you with her.

What She Excels At

Literary and Contemporary Fiction

Tanya Eby has a real gift for literary fiction and the more interior end of contemporary. The kind of book where the action is mostly happening inside the character’s head, where the prose is lush, where a less-skilled narrator could let the listener drift. She holds you. Her pacing of long interior passages is masterful. She does not rush. She trusts the prose.

Domestic and Family Drama

She is also wonderful with family stories. Multiple generations, complicated mother-daughter relationships, the slow-burn drama of a family secret unfolding. She differentiates voices subtly, never showy, and the result is that you always know who is speaking without ever feeling like you are watching a costume show.

Memoir and Nonfiction

Tanya also narrates nonfiction beautifully. Memoir especially. Her ability to make a first-person narrative feel intimate without slipping into self-conscious “audiobook voice” is rare and valuable. If you are a nonfiction listener and you have not tried her there, do.

A Few Listens to Get You Started

If you are new to Tanya Eby, my advice is to follow your reading taste. Her catalog is deep across literary, contemporary, women’s fiction, and domestic suspense. Look at her audiography, find a synopsis that grabs you, and dive in. You will not be steered wrong.

Thank You, Tanya

For #JIAM16 Narrator Day, I want to say a sincere thank you to Tanya Eby for the hours of company she has given me on walks, in cars, and during long evenings of folding laundry. The good narrators do not just narrate books. They become part of how we move through the year. Tanya is one of mine.

If you are a fan, drop your favorite Tanya Eby performance in the comments. Listeners deciding where to start will thank you, and you will probably make Tanya’s day too.

#LoveAudiobooks. Always.
