NOTE: These “reviews” are as simple as it gets (and mostly for tracking purposes)! They will have a rating, first thought, narrator thought (quick), and will officially be filed 🙂  Listened for Fun (Audible) Overall Rating: 4.00 Story Rating: 3.75 Character Rating: 4.25 Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating) First Thought when Finished: The Harvesting is a story that grew on me over the course of the story and I am very curious as to where it is heading! Quick Thoughts: This was a Dewey’s Read-a-Thon listen and I was scared in the beginning that I had selected wrong. I didn’t particular like the characters and quite frankly was hoping some of them would die (like major ones). However as the story progressed and the “world” got worse–the writing really hooked me. I can’t say that I love any of the characters but they are fitting for what is going on. This book took 3 turns that I didn’t expect and the end had me wondering where exactly they were going now. I will continue the series because I just have to know! Audio Thoughts Narrated By Kristin James / Length: 7 hrs and 7 mins I thought Kristin was a good fit for this story. She was able to bring the characters (and their flaws) to the surface. She was able to hook me into the story and keep me on the edge of my seat. I do really think her narration coupled with Melanie’s writing was a great match.     Listened for Review (Tantor) Overall Rating: 4.00 Story Rating: 4.25 Character Rating: 3.75 Audio Rating: 3.50 (not part of the overall rating) First Thought when Finished: Well I didn’t see that coming in the end but The Eternal World was a fascinating read/listen! Quick Thoughts: I am a fan of Christopher Farnsworth’s Presidential Vampire series. I know he can write really interesting worlds that are different yet familiar. You can almost see these things happening right under our noses. The Eternal World was another story that just made me go OMG that is brilliant yet scary. He took a pretty popular mythology and said well what if this happened? What would you do if you held the secret to ever lasting life? How would you treat it? What would it corrupt in you? How would you stop it? Needless to say this was part thriller, part thinker, and all really good! My personal answer? I am glad I am not responsible for that kind of power! Audio Thoughts Narrated By Tom Perkins / Length: 10 hrs and 34 mins I thought Tom was a good fit for most of the characters except for two: David and Shako. Overall though still an enjoyable listen and I would listen to Tom again.       Listened for Fun (Library) Overall Rating: 4.50 (only rating since non-fiction) Audio Rating: 5.00 (not part of the overall rating) First Thought when Finished: A Mother’s Reckoning was heartbreaking to listen […]

DNF Report September 2014: It’s Me Not You (These are from May 2, 2014 to Sept 30, 2014)   Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld My rating: 1 of 5 stars Listened for Review (Simon & Schuster) Overall Rating: DNF Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating) Quick DNF Thoughts: Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld will work for others but I just couldn’t stay engaged. I found myself tuning out for parts and coming back to find I didn’t think I missed much. I gave it 40% (which for this book is about the time to listen to a whole other book) so I think I gave it enough to decide if it was for me. It had a little too much angst (in both stories) to appeal to me. Also, I hope YA authors don’t act like the authors in this book because if so I hope to never hang out with them. I am guessing though it was an exaggerated version of authors in NY. There are plenty of great reviews for this book please go read them. The things I did like: the pacing was fantastic and the writing was tight. I have never read Scott before but will try him in the future. Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Sheetal Sheth, Heather Lind / Length: 15 hrs and 13 mins I thought both narrators were outstanding. They had great pacing, emotion, and deliverance. They managed to keep me going with the audiobook long after I would have normally given up. I love when narrators can do that for me. So if you get a chance listen to this on audio! Remember Me Like This by Bret Anthony Johnston My rating: 1 of 5 stars Listened for Review (Random House Audio) Overall Rating: DNF Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating) It’s Not You, It’s Me DNF Review: I gave Remember Me Like This by Bret Anthony Johnston 2.5 hours and just could not get into the story. This is one of those thrillers that I think you have to care about the characters in order for it to work and they just did not click with me. I do think this story will work for other people. Audio Thoughts: Narrated By Mark Bramhall / Length: 12 hrs and 45 mins Mark Bramhall did an excellent job with the narration. His pacing was excellent and each of the characters had distinct personalities that his voice enhanced. I will give books narrated by him a try in the future. Notes about DNF Ratings: I am a moody reader. Sometimes books do not work for me simply because of the mood that I am. Plus, I think reading is so individual and what works for one reader, won’t work for all. I track all books that I read and that includes DNFs. Have to keep it real. I always suggest reading other reviews on all my DNF reviews. Wedding Cake and Big Mistakes by Nancy Naigle My rating: 1 of […]
