Review: Soulless by Gail Carriger (Rating 4 Wine Glasses)

From Goodreads: Without a morsel of exaggeration, its publisher describes this debut novel as “a comedy of manners set in Victorian London full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.” At the center of Soulless‘s “parasol protectorate” is Miss Alexia Tarabotti, a young woman who lacks not only a suitor but also a soul. And those are not her only problems: When she accidentally kills a vampire, it begins a series of events that she must set out to resolve without the help of any proper authorities. A charming mass market original.

What I Loved: Soulless was a wonderful mix of romance, intrigue, and all things proper English (with a supernatural twist).  This is the first steampunk novel that I have ever read/listened too.  The mixture of science and story were both intriguing and fun to read.  The amount of description in this book for everything (clothing, buildings, instruments) took some getting used too but afterward was a fantastic way to get a visual of this world.  The story itself was fantastic and Alexia was a great central character.  She was very multi-dimensional despite not having a soul.  I loved Lord Maccon too, he was the perfect match for her.

What I Liked: Soulless would not be the book it is without all the supporting characters.  They continually add to the story in the most unexpected ways.  I love her friendships with the unfortunately dressed friend and her dandy vampire.  They were both good companions for her to have.

Complaints: None

Audiobook Review:  The narrator, Emily Gray, was fantastic!  The only voice I found annoying was Mr. Seimens but even then he was annoying anyway.  The reading pace was fantastic and the nuances were just perfect.

Why I gave it a 4: Soulless was more than I expected and kept me interested from beginning to end.  I will be continuing this series and in audiobook.

Who I would recommend it too: Steampunk Readers

Ack, I must read this. Since Meljean's Steampunk I am smitten with the genre! Plus, I have books one and two. I really like that you mention good things about the supporting characters. I like when supporting characters add to the storyline and not hinder. Great review!

I really liked the first in the series, but am waiting until they are all out before I pick up the rest. However, I think Amanda wasn't a huge fan of the second book, but loved the third. Great review!

I adored this book, and I'm so glad to hear that you liked it as well, Felicia! I haven't gotten the chance to read the sequels yet, but I've got both of them on my shelf! 🙂

So you FINALLY read Soulless. XD About time chica! Knew you'd love it. And yes the second one has a horrible cliff hanger! The third one is just sitting on my shelf glaring at me. Stupid book tours are keeping me away from it. 🙁

I loved Soulless. Just be aware that there is a cliffhanger in the second book. The third is much better. =)
