Dead until Dark by Charlaine Harris
Date Read: May 1st 2001
Genre: Fantasy, Urban Fantasy
Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of "disability." She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill. He's tall, dark, handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the kind of guy she's been waiting for all her life.
But Bill has a disability of his own: He's a vampire. Worse than that, hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind.
And when one of Sookie's colleagues is killed, she begins to fear she'll be next ..

*SPOILERS because well this is like the 5th ReRead for me!*
Original Review in 2009 (Horrid Writing but not tweaking it! Also I think it was a reread review too. Clearly I wasn’t far along in the series when I reread it or my Bill reaction would have been stronger aka mentioned):
This book is a very good introduction book. It pretty much introduces most of the main characters used throughout the series. Of course, some of them are just in passing (not enough Eric–but that is a theme until later)! She has a good way of letting you know how they think, why they react the way they do, and let’s you really get immersed in the town of Bon Temps. This is a must read for anyone who likes PNR with a cheeky twist!
ReRead Review 2013:
First Thought When Finished: I swear I now ReRead Dead until Dark going: Oh look Bill is an ass! Oh look, there goes Bill being an Ass again and I didn’t catch it the first time! Why did I love Bill in the beginning? Dang him and his ass ways later in the series! Oh wait, now that I think of it his being an ass was kind of obvious I just wasn’t paying attention.
Character Thoughts: I love Bon Temps! I have to admit on the ReRead that I disliked Bill so much that it took away from the characters a bit. I will admit though that I liked sticking my toe back into the beginning of the world and getting introduced to the characters all over again. It reminded me of my love for the weird, strange, and downright redneck characterization of all my favorite Bon Temps peeps!
Story Thoughts: I will admit on the reread that I am still crushed every darn time when Gran dies! I mean I seriously love that woman to pieces. Also, since I know who the killer is the mystery is a little gone BUT I spent the whole book going “oh I see a clue there” and “wink wink, nudge nudge”. I think rereads make you look at the books differently and I can’t wait to reread Dead in Dallas (it is one of my favorite in the Series)!
Final Thoughts: I am going to miss Bon Temps when the last book releases this May. I just know that I will cry!
During her non-reading time you can find her hanging with her rescue furr children named after book characters: Lizzie a beautiful cattle dog mix (Pound Pup), Cinder a beautiful Shep/Pitt mix (Pound Pup), and Minerva a beautiful Shep/Pitt mix (Foster Fail).
