Hi y’all and welcome to my Readers & Ritas Countdown Week 6: Missy Jane edition! I have asked Missy to stop by and tell us about her Readers & Ritas experiences. I have been to several of these conferences and look forward to them every year! Readers & Ritas starts FRIDAY! I am so excited that it is finally here 🙂
When You’re Here, You’re Family
I haven’t been to a lot of conventions. My first Readers n’Ritas was in 2011, then I attended again in 2012. The first thing I noticed was how small and intimate the event is. That’s definitely a good thing. Rubbing elbows with New York Times bestsellers in the elevator is great, but then they forget your face as soon as you reach your floor. At an intimate convention like RnR you get to know not only the authors, but the readers and bloggers as well. Everyone has become like one big family that I look forward to seeing again and again.
When I arrived at the hotel that first year I knew no one. It was my first con attendance as a published author and though I knew some people online, I had no clue who anyone was in person. It’s kind of awkward walking around staring at everyone’s midsection to read their nametags. To be honest I was very nervous. I texted my husband before heading downstairs and told him. He texted back: Everyone’s going to love you because you’re awesome. That made me laugh but also gave me the little boost I needed to step out of my hotel room. Then the coolest thing happened when I stepped off the elevator. I almost ran into a woman named Melissa. I commented on having the same name and we hit it off.
By the end of that weekend I’d made some great friends and had an absolute blast. The next year was even better. I can’t describe the feeling of walking into the hotel and hearing someone call my name in greeting. I felt like Norm from Cheers! There were familiar faces and new faces too. Overall I had an awesome time. Now my husband knows I’ll be leaving him one weekend a year to hang out with readers and writers. I can’t wait to see what new people and fun events 2013 brings!
*Make reading a guilty pleasure…*
Ms. Missy Jane is the alter ego of a married mother of four who was born and raised in Texas. A few years ago she finished reading a book by Mercedes Lackey and thought “Now, what if…” and a monster was created. Missy now spends most of her time lost in worlds of her own making, alternately loving and hating such creatures as vampires, shape-shifters and gargoyles (to name a few). When not writing, she spends her time reading, taking photos of her beautiful daughters and training her husband to believe she’s always right.
Missy can also be found online at:
