Length: 19 hrs and 41 mins

Date Read: January 2014

Goodreads

Summer. Massachusetts.

An old Silver Wraith with a frightening history. A story about one serial killer and his lingering, unfinished business.

Anyone could be next.

We're going to Christmasland...

NOS4A2 is an old-fashioned horror novel in the best sense. Claustrophobic, gripping and terrifying, this is a story that will have you on the edge of the seat while you read, and leaving the lights on while you sleep. With the horrific tale of Charles Manx and his Silver Wraith, Joe Hill has established himself as the premiere horror and supernatural thriller writer of his generation.

First Thought when Finished: NOS4R2 by Joe Hill was Freaking Amazing!

Story Thoughts: Tip #1 while listening to NOS4R2- DO NOT read/listen right before bed time or you will have crazy dreams. Tip #2 while listening to NOS4R2- Be prepared to be shocked at any given time because this is one crazy ride. I won’t say that NOS4R2 was “can’t sleep” scary, instead I think it was more of a slow and steady romp through your thoughts that leaves you thinking and trembling at the same time. This was an amazing thriller that had a touch of the horrific.

Character Thoughts: Vic and Charlie, Charlie and Vic–these two are so interwoven that if either wasn’t written to the tee, the story would have failed. Both Vic and Charlie deliver in their own unique way. I loved that the story was very character driven. Neither character being just one dimensional but so multi-layered that you weren’t sure what you were going to learn next!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Kate Mulgrew / Length: 19 hrs and 41 mins

I have to admit I get a little squeamish when books over 12 hours only have one narrator but I needn’t fret, Kate pulled it off! She did a brilliant job with the pacing, story, and characters.

Final Thoughts:Joe Hill has a new fan!

I was a little worried about Kate Mulgrew too, as she’s much older than Vic, but she was amazing! I honestly can’t wait to read what Joe Hill does next, because I have liked each novel more than the last. Well, except 20th Century Ghost, his short story collection. That was the first thing he came out with, and it’s brilliant, so I probably enjoy that more than Heart-Shaped Box or Horns, but it’s tied with NOS4A2. 😉

I am going to see if my library has Horns or Heart-Shaped Box because I really did love this one. Plus, October is always all paranormal, mysteries, and horror for me 🙂

Kate Mulgrew was BRILLIANT! I know her from Orange is the New Black and I heard that she was awesome on Star Trek (whatever version). However, she totally freaking rocked the narration. She is as surprisingly good as Bronson Pinchot was to me at narrating books.
