It was May who taught Kaylie the comfort of home, and the healing power of baking the perfect brownie. Years later, May leaves Kaylie the money she needs to open her own café in the charming Victorian house they once shared. Now back in Hope Springs, Kaylie?s determined to finally make all her dreams a reality?and unearth answers to lingering questions about her past.

Soon, however, Kaylie?s carefully laid plans take an unexpected turn. The house needs far more work than she realized, and Tennessee Keller, the carpenter Kaylie hires, is proving to be a very handsome and very unneeded distraction from her quest to uncover the truth about her parents. When a crisis threatens to destroy everything she?s worked so hard to build, Kaylie must decide where her heart lies: with the ghosts of her past or the love and promise of her future.

Overall Rating: 3.50
Story Rating: 3.50
Character Rating: 3.50

Audio Rating: 3.50 (not part of the overall rating)

First Thought When Finished: Strong beginning but the end kind of tapered off. I think there were too many things that were trying to be tied up.

Story Thoughts: The Second Chance Cafe was a heart-warming story that made me want to believe in second chances. While I think the story had to much going on at certain times, the overall theme was fantastic. There were some heart-warming moments, some sad moments, and one really steamy scene towards the end (I read romance so this wasn’t too bad but it felt a little out of place in this story). The romance was sweet, slow, and perfect for the two people involved. The side-story was actually a little more interesting to me and would have loved for it to be flushed out more.

Character Thoughts: The characters in The Second Chance Cafe came in all shades of grey. I kind of like the idea that no one is perfect and we all have flaws. The main decisions that each of them had to make made me want to give them all a big ole group hug. There was a lot of love and wanting to do the right behind every single person in this story.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Natalie Ross / Length: 9 hrs and 31 mins

Natalie Ross is really brilliant at women’s voices, pacing, and emotions. My only complaint with this audiobook was the main guy’s voice, it just did not click for me.

Final Thought: The Second Chance Cafe was a sweet romance with a strong emotional backbone!

About Alison Kent

I often read of or hear about authors who knew they were meant to tell stories from the time they left the crib. Me? I didn’t decide what I wanted to be when I grew up until I was thirty years old – and then sold my first book at thirty-four. Still, it was obvious that I always knew I was going places.

Like so many other authors, I was a voracious reader from day one, devouring everything from Nancy Drew to My Friend Flicka, which I remember sitting hovered over the heater vent in the kitchen floor to read while my father made his coffee.

I moved on to my mother’s Phyllis Whitney, Dorothy Eden, and Mary Stewart gothics before discovering my first true romances written by Lucy Walker and set in the Australian Outback. And then, at last, when I was 18 I found ‘The Flame and the Flower’. (My son almost spent his life as Brandon because of that, but I spared him and named him Casey instead!)

Why write romance? Because love stories have always been a major part of the books I’ve loved. Father Ralph and Meggie Cleary. (I did name my daughter Megan after reading The Thorn Birds! Do you see a trend here?) The aforementioned Brandon Birmingham and Heather Simmons. Wolf Mackenzie and Mary Potter.

Even more so, it’s because I love writing romance heroes. The men who sweep both heroines and readers off their feet – not to mention their authors, too!

I’ve spent several years happily writing action adventure romance for Kensington Brava along with hot and sexy series romances for Harlequin Blaze. Now I’m thrilled to be a launch author for Vows

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Shannon McManus / Length: 7 hrs and 15 mins

This is a quick and beautifully narrated piece by Shannon McManus. Her emotion, pacing, and styling was perfect for And Then I Found You. I really think the narration added an extra "oomph" to the story and made me connect even more with the characters. I highly recommend this on audio!

Final Thought: This was a deviation from the type of story I normally read but I really did enjoy it! I did cry so if you read it grab some hankies!

She?s made them before. Now it?s time to do it again.

Kate has a secret, something tucked away in her past. And she?s getting on with her life. Her business is thriving. She has a strong relationship with her family, and a devoted boyfriend whom she wants to love with all her heart. If Kate had ever made a list, Rowan would fill the imagined boxes of a perfect mate. But she wants more than the perfect on paper relationship; she wants a real and imperfect love. That's why, when Kate discovers the small velvet box hidden in Rowan's drawer, she panics.

It always happens this way. Just when Kate thinks she can love, just when she believes she can conquer the fear, she?s filled with dread. And she wants more than anything to make this feeling go away. But how?

When the mistakes have been made and the running is over, it?s time to face the truth. Kate knows this. She understands that a woman can never undo what can never be undone. Yet, for the first time in her life she also knows that she won?t fully love until she confronts those from her past. It?s time to act.

Can she do it? Can she travel to the place where it all began, to the one who shares her secret? Can the lost ever become found?

And Then I Found You gives new life to the phrase ?inspired by a true story.? By travelling back to a painful time in her own family?s history, the author explores the limits of courage, and the price of a selfless act.

First Thought When Finished: And Then I Found You was a heart-string pulling story that hits all the right emotional spots!

Story Thoughts: And Then I Found You was a little bit romance, a little bit family/loved one drama, and a whole lot emotional. This was a story of one woman’s journey in life that included giving up a baby for adoption, making/changing careers, having (and losing and finding) a great love, and finally reconciling her past so that she could have a future. The story will make you cry, make you angry, and make you want to slap some people upside the head. Some choices made by the characters will make you shake your head and cry for them but the journey of this messy life (lives) will resonate to your emotional core.

Character Thoughts: There is a character for everyone in this story. While Kate (the main character) is the emotional center of And Then I Found You, it really can be said that her journey impacts so many people that it is their story too. How all of these people interact, engage, and emote will have you being more aware of how your actions and decisions trickle down to others. Kate is not always likable or identifiable but her journey is one of love and understanding. I found myself pulling for her even when I really wanted to go “why are you doing that”. Kate is proof that even the most together person on the outside can have scars that we just don’t see!

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Shannon McManus / Length: 7 hrs and 15 mins

This is a quick and beautifully narrated piece by Shannon McManus. Her emotion, pacing, and styling was perfect for And Then I Found You. I really think the narration added an extra “oomph” to the story and made me connect even more with the characters. I highly recommend this on audio!

Final Thought: This was a deviation from the type of story I normally read but I really did enjoy it! I did cry so if you read it grab some hankies!

NOTE: I also read the companion self-pubbed book of how Patti Callahan Henry’s real life story played into the basis of And Then I Found You! If you get a chance, you should read it too! It is called Friend Request

But her happiness is short-lived when murder turns her charming store into a little shop of horrors When Joelle Ayers, the fiancee of Dev's ex-boyfriend, is found handcuffed to a hotel bed and murdered with a champagne bottle and a stiletto, a revenge-crazed cop is determined to put Dev behind bars. The cuffs and the champagne were part of a gift basket Dev had made and they have her fingerprints all over them. Now the finger of suspicion is pointing directly at Dev. Desperate to clear her name, Dev enlists the help of her two longtime pals Poppy and Boone. Luckily, the sexy new guy in town, Jake DelVecchio, decides to assist -- and it's a big plus that he happens to be a Deputy U.S. Marshal. If they don't solve this murder, Dev may soon be trading in her charming new life for a life behind bars.

First Thought When Finished: Dare I say that this was a steamy cozy mystery? Had a bit of a kick in the romance department *hubba hubba*

Story Thoughts: Quirky, Fun, and a little outrageous is what I would call a Little Shop of Homicide. It was a fantastic afternoon read with a who-dun-it that was a little off the beaten path. It was fun, saucy, and sassy. In fact, the romance was a little hot and heavy for a cozy mystery. That was actually a fun surprise for me since romance is my favorite genre to read. Nothing over the line but it was fun to see that element get a little more time. I was a little disappointed in how the case played out but otherwise Little Shop of Homicide was a fun and engaging read.

Character Thoughts: I am a sucker for quirky characters! Little Shop of Homicide is full of them and they shined. There might be a triangle brewing (not happy about that as I am OPPOSED TO LOVE TRIANGLES) so in the future I might not be as happy but for this entry the characters were fantastic. Dev was a great leading lady: smart, fun, and independent. She has insecurities, a back story that will make you want to hug her, and great friends. It will be fun to watch her tackle life in future installments as she also has a penchant for landing in the middle of trouble. Also, her back story needs delved into and hopefully some resolution there.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by Maia Guest/Running Time 8h 55m

The narration was fun, light, and had good pacing. It was a quick listen and the production levels were pretty good. I wasn’t a fan of the male voices but loved her version of Dev!

Final Thoughts: Fun beginning to a series that I will be continuing :)

Overall Rating: 4.25
Good to Know Rating: 4.00
Knowledge Manager Rating: 4.50 (aka Chris Hardwick)

Audio Rating: 4.50 (not part of the overall rating)

First Thought When Finished: This was a humorous self-help book with some really great ideas! Nothing new but the presentation really worked!

Good To Know Thoughts: I will admit that self-help books are kind of my guilty pleasure. I am also a total geek and a big fan of all things nerdom. Here is the deal, if you read any kind of self-improvement books you know they are not really telling you anything new. Presentation is the key to getting some of the messages to stick. The Nerdist Way takes the humorous and direct way of getting the messages across. There is cursing, examples in relation to Dungeons and Dragons, and some very frank “just get it done” speak. Chris didn’t use fancy terms (though he made up a few of his own) and really speaks directly to the target audience: the geeks and nerds of the world. There really is some great advice in here and the activities will help reinforce some good behavior. If you are looking something new and earth-shattering this is not the book. If you are looking for something straight-forward, fun, and sometimes self eye-opening then this will work for you.

NOTE: You must understand Geek/Nerd culture to get some of the references. Then again, I doubt you would look at this book if you didn’t.

Knowledge Manager Thoughts: Why did I call Chris or any other self-help book author a Knowledge Manager? That is what they are! If you are a going to write a self-help book than you had better be able to manage that knowledge. Chris practices (from what I can tell) what he talks about. He uses some real life experience to reinforce the ideas that he suggests that we incorporate into our lives. His humor, bluntness, and fun attitude do come across in The Nerdist Way. Fans of his won’t be disappointed on that scale. I found him to be real and relatable which always helps when taking advice from someone. Overall, he was a great person to send this particular message.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by Chris Hardwick/Running Time 6h 10m

Non-Fiction read by the author is always better than using another narrator. The belief and feeling they have their subject matter is always apparent. Chris did a fantastic job with the narration, pacing, and adding emotion into the written word. I highly recommend this on audio.

Final Thoughts: The Nerdist Way exceeded my expectations and dare I say, I had fun listening to a self-help book. Great read for the Nerd/Geeks of the world.

Vince Santini considers himself the last man standing. Being the only unmarried brother is a badge of honor, until the woman had always been in his heart returns. Acting on his attraction hadn?t been an option seeing that she was his best friend?s girl, but now she is single and free for him to pursue.

Julianna Andrews is a survivor. It took her years to walk away from her abusive husband, and now all she cares about is building her business. She doesn?t have time for Vince or the temptation he represents. He is a reminder of her past. One argument leads to a heated kiss, and the passion that threatens to consume them both.

Vince knows that Jules might not be ready for happily ever after with anyone, but he is bound and determined to convince her that he can give her that?and more. This Santini is happy to be the last man standing?as long as he is HER man.
