Length: 11 hrs and 44 mins

She’s the obsession two men share: one wants her love, the other wants her life.

A shared passion for justice first brought Baton Rouge district attorney Lauren Chandler and US marshal Anthony Ross together—when each played their part in bringing down the infamous Bayou Butcher. The sparks flying between the two made it clear they weren’t just a legal dream team. Then desire had to make way for duty, and what they had was done. But it would never be over.

Five years later, it’s none other than the Butcher who gets things started again, when his shocking jailbreak reunites the lawyer and the lawman…and reignites their love. But this time, the pair is in danger of being permanently parted—by a killer with revenge on his mind, and Lauren on the top of his list. As a new wave of terror sweeps through the streets and swamps of Baton Rouge, one man will pit his boundless passion against another’s relentless hate, for the life of the woman who obsesses them both.

First Thought when Finished: Dang, That Cynthia Eden had me thinking I was so smart, then surprised me.

Story Thoughts: I really enjoy Romantic Suspense and Cynthia Edens always delivers something that keeps you hanging on. In this book there were so many twists and turns and I REALLY thought I was going to be so disappointed that I had figured it out halfway through..then it turns out, I hadn’t figured it out at all.  I like that Cynthia Eden always writes women who feel confident in their careers. Both the main character Lauren and the side character Cadence are strong career driven females.

Character Thoughts: I wish I could say I loved Anthony Ross, the lead male, but I just didn’t. Both Anthony and Lauren have such painful pasts and I thought Edens did a good job of explaining why he was the way he was, especially in terms of Lauren but it just still bordered a bit too intense for me.  I really liked Lauren and I thought she stood up well to Anthony for the issues they had in the past and him walking away. I also liked the side Character of Cadence and look forward to her story and since this story has characters from other books, I enjoy seeing some of the same people and keeping up with them so to speak.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Emily Beresford / Length: 11 hrs and 44 mins

I thought Emily did a fine job, but something about the way she read Anthony Ross didn’t sit well with me. I think I may have liked him more if It had been a book where he didn’t have someone else’s emotions in the way I heard the story. Overall I enjoyed the narration and will listen to more of Cynthia Edens works this way. Edens jumps around so you get different character views which does give you insight into most the characters. I liked that but in audio it can be a little bit confusing as you figure out who is speaking as you don’t see a page break.

Final Thoughts: If you like Romantic Suspense you would really enjoy this and Edens other stories (Valentine killer, Deadly Series). Technically this IS a continuation of characters from The Valentine Killer Book Die For Me. I do not think it needs to be read first but if you are the kind of reader who will spend the rest of your thoughts wondering what else from the Valentine case you don’t know.. it is mentioned several times in this story.

  1. Romantic suspense is a genre I really need to get into and try. I love the fact that this surprised you when you had it all figured out. Great review, Mindy. I know what you mean though about narrators not getting male voices right, it kind of ruins the listen for me.

  2. I’ve been looking at Cynthia Eden’s books, but I just don’t know where to start. I actually think I have a review book of hers but haven’t gotten to it yet. She does paranormal too and I’m not sure which to start with.

  3. “I REALLY thought I was going to be so disappointed that I had figured it out halfway through..then it turns out, I hadn’t figured it out at all.”

LOVE it when that happens Felicia! With murder mysteries or thrillers, nothing is more fun for me then being completely wrong about the who or why:) Too bad you didn’t care for Anthony all that much, but I like that you were at least given reasons for why he was the way he was.

  4. Thank you! Romance suspense is probably the only subgenre I don’t do much of, but I really like the sound of this. I listened to narrator for the first time with Blackbirds, and I did enjoy her performance, so I’ll be Ok with her.

  5. This sounds good and I am one of those readers who would wonder what I missed in the book before so I would have to start at the 🙂
