Audiobook Review: Complicated by Kristen Ashley #LoveAudiobooksFormat: Audiobook

Complicated by Kristen Ashley, Lance Greenfield, Erin Mallon
Length: 18 hrs and 14 mins

Date Read: May 2017

Exclusively written for Audible, available only in audio. From the New York Times best-selling author of the Rock Chick series comes a story of love, murder, and second chances....

When small-town Nebraska sheriff Hixon Drake meets Greta Dare, the connection couldn't be stronger, but the timing couldn't be worse.

Dealing with the fallout of a divorce he never wanted and setting up a new home for his kids, Hix becomes that guy, that one he never wanted to be, and puts a stop to things before they can even start. Protecting his kids and himself is his only priority.

Greta, on the other hand, has found the place for her and the brother she adores that's perfect for them - a sleepy little town in Nebraska. She's learned from life that there are no hopes and dreams. The only thing to look forward to is peace. And that's what she works hard to build for herself and her brother. Right up until Hix walks into her life.

Hix can't fight the pull and stay away from Greta for long. And Greta's finding it hard not to hope for something more with all the promise that is Hix.

But when the first murder that's happened in over five decades rocks his small, sleepy county, Hix has got to learn to trust again, convince Greta to take a shot with him, and at the same time catch a killer.

In other words, things are definitely...Complicated.

Quick Thoughts: This is another Kristen Ashley book where I really thought the leading lady (Greta) was too good for the leading guy. Greta was strong, independent, feisty, complicated, talented, not perfect, and really someone I could see hanging out with. Hix got on my last nerve for 2/3rds of the book with his “assume I am right” attitude. It wasn’t until the last 1/3 I felt he finally sort of pulled his head out of his arse. That being said, I really liked the story. It dealt with a lot of different issues and did it well. Though I will admit the whole “ex” is a b*tch thing again got on my nerves but I have come to accept that is how Kristen writes 90% of ex-wives. Makes me sad for the kids and I guess my real life experience of having a great mom/stepmom probably makes me more aware of it in the books. Great example of why reading is so personal.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated By Lance Greenfield, Erin Mallon / Length: 18 hrs and 14 mins

I was really impressed with Lance/Erin’s narration of Complicated. I had to look but unless these are alias names–I have not listened to either before. I will listen to both in the future. The book flowed really well with great pacing, emotion, and technically on point.

  1. I’ve listened to both narrators. Erin Mallon is probably my TOP fav female narrator. I think I 1st heard her on the Sweet Trilogy by Wendy Higgines (mature YA neph/demon mythology series). I’m so glad you’ve discovered two new must-listen narrators, yay!

  2. I haven’t read anything by her yet and I’m afraid to. that kind of alpha guy holds little appeal for me these days even though I used to love it.

    • Then don’t–she writes very throwback alphas. Sometimes they do not cross the line and other times I am like grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

    • I get that exes don’t get along but that is usually on both of their parts. It drives me nuts when it is always the ex-wife that is the nut/crazy/bitch.
