The Black Widow by Jennifer Estep
Narrator: Lauren Fortgang
Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins

Date Read: December 2014

Genre: Fantasy, Urban Fantasy

There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill—and my murder to plan.

With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit.

The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident—and that each unfortunate “coincidence” is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bulls-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

First Thoughts when Finished: Black Widow by Jennifer Estep was another strong entry in Elemental Assassins series. The characters are still as bad*ss as ever. Also, I really dug the different way that this all “played” out in the end. MM was not my favorite villain in the series but I think she maybe was the craftiest. I was just happy that it appears Bria is finally ok with her sister (let’s hope cause if not I am taking Finn back).

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by: Lauren Fortgang /Length: 10 hrs and 17 mins

Once a series goes into automatic listen (which this is for me) I sound a bit like a broken record. However, let me state this again: Lauren nails Gin and Gang with the sass, brass, and southern of a narrator who just might really be an elemental assassin! She is that convincing 🙂 So just listen to it already!

  1. LOL. Still behind in this series b/c chicken. I’m sure things work out with Owen (why else would there be a novella from his POV?), but just in case it doesn’t, I need a LOT of unread installments to get me through it. ALSO–you can’t have Finn, he’s MINE. *runs off with Finn*

  2. #12, gah! Another fantastic UF series I’m falling behind in. I loved the first few books. Glad you’re still enjoying the series. I may need to move these further up my TBR pile. Great review.

  3. I was worried MM was going to be a Mab Monroe 2 and was very glad to be mistaken.
The other day I was thinking about posible series to listen to and didn’t thought about it… Now I know it’s good on audio, so I will add it to my TBL. 😉

  4. I just love this series Felicia! And I’m with you on Bria, I was starting to get really irritated at her for treating Gin as less than for doing what needs to be done. Some people just need to die and Gin knows that 😉 Can’t wait for the next one!

    • I love audiobooks but no you aren’t the last. I have friends that refuse to listen to them LOL We had a debate last night at book club about it. However, if you do try them and find they work–you can get so much more reading in. You can listen while working out, cleaning house, driving, blogging! Seriously if you cut out my audiobooks, i would not get much reading done at all (I try not to do much sitting at night)

  5. I will put the first one on my audio wishlist since I haven’t read this series yet and I want too. I have the first book in paperback but it sounds like it would be much better in audio. 🙂
