Balancing the Book Budget 2014

It is that time again: Balancing the Book Budget 2014 is about to commence!

I did really well last year spending $1000 less than I did the year before and even though I didn’t make my overall goal–I AM HAPPY! This year is a little different as I have something huge happening in my life and my purse strings are going to be tight! So my book budget was one of the first things to go but fortunately for me I have awesome family and friends so the Gift Cards I got for Christmas/My Birthday should tie me over.

This is my goal for 2014: Spend less than $150 on books for the year!

What does that mean exactly: Before you start to hyperventilate on my behalf it should be noted that I have 24 credits with audible for audiobooks, $350 in Gift Cards to Amazon for books, a library card, and review audiobooks.

Here are my rules:

  • All books must be bought with Christmas/Birthday/Just Because Gift Money. I can only go $150 over that for the yearย  (this is the amount of money in my change can) and I am guessing all of that will be on audiobooks in one form or another (either add-on deal or extra 3 credits)
  • I am not tracking review books this year. I am going to start only requesting books from NetGalley and Edelweiss from authors I read currently.
  • I must read/listen to 5 books off my TBR a month! Time to start knocking those suckers off my list!

That is all there is to my rules this year! I will be doing a monthly post again tracking my progress! Let the year of spending wisely start!

Good luck with your goals. I have used the library a lot more since cutting back on spending. I also have a Kindle, so take advantage of the daily deals and other low prices there. I love your 5 books off TBR each month!! I should totally add that to my goals this year as well.

I’m terrified to see how much I spend every year. To be fair, I just lost ALL my books with the exception of TWO. I had four big storage bins full, and then due to some personal issues, had to move across the country with just a suitcase and get rid of them all. So this year I’ll probably spend quite a bit getting some of them back. But I think I’ll keep track this year, just to see. It will be interesting.

Good luck with your budget! I’ve had to cut my Audible subscription down this year due to my own budget cuts, so I feel your pain!

I try to keep my eye out for the Kindle 99p (or $0.99 in the US I suppose!) deals which makes things cheaper, or the library is a great idea as you say.

Good luck with the house, budget and reading all those unread books!

Yikes that is a tight budget!! Goodluck, I know you will be able to do it ๐Ÿ™‚ I am also on a book buying ban and am only allowed to buy books that complete an existing series that is on my bookshelf.
You have something huge happening in your life??? I cannot wait to find out then!

I never set a book budget though I guess I should. Like you I have many books on my shelf unread. And I have heaps of audiobooks not yet listened to on Audible. Maybe next year I think I will budget because like you my life will change and I may need to tidy up my spending!

Impressive! I spend very little on books these days as I am drowning in ARCs from NG and Edelweiss and until I catch up there is no point in buying books because I won’t be reading them. On the bright side once I get around to those books I want they are usually discounted or at the library. I guess there are some benefits to drowning in books! Happy New Year! Best of luck with your challenge!

Good luck with your book budget this year – with all those gift cards it sound very doable! I’m going to actually be doing a book budget for the first time this year. Book Blogging has introduced me to so many new books that I need to start watching myself a bit better! plus I have so many books I haven’t even read yet… so why spend so much, right?

good luck and happy new year!

I’m planning on buying considerably less books this year and your $150 still scares me! Though, kudos on all the great gift certificates! And using the library is awesome! I need to get into a routine with my library at some point this year … the cold weather always makes me want to stay home. Good luck with your book buying goals!

Good for you on your spending goals! I haven’t even looked, though maybe I should do that this year. I do know I’m spending less than I used to before blogging (mostly because of ARCs) but I also do a lot more impulse buying because of blogger recommendations. *sigh*

Happy New Year! Good luck on your book budget! I know it’s harder than it seems, but you seem determined. Have you heard of Audiobook Jukebox? I review audiobooks through them every month in return for free audiobooks, which might help your budget out even more. Sometimes you get mp3’s, but several books I got in the mail on cd, and while I haven’t requested any on Audible, some that you can request come with an Audible download code. It’s definitely introduced me to even more audiobooks, since I listen to them all the time!

O my. I can’t even keep myself from spending that much a month. Then I never get giftcards or anything like that, so. I wish you good luck and look forward to your posts about it. And by finally attacking your existing stack of books, I hope you find some hidden gems in there!
