Clary Fray just wishes that her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re a demon-slaying Shadowhunter, your mother is in a magically induced coma, and you can suddenly see Downworlders like werewolves, vampires, and faeries? If Clary left the world of the Shadowhunters behind, it would mean more time with her best friend, Simon, who’s becoming more than a friend. But the Shadowhunting world isn’t ready to let her go โ€” especially her handsome, infuriating, newfound brother, Jace. And Clary’s only chance to help her mother is to track down rogue Shadowhunter Valentine, who is probably insane, certainly evil โ€” and also her father.

To complicate matters, someone in New York City is murdering Downworlder children. Is Valentine behind the killings โ€” and if he is, what is he trying to do? When the second of the Mortal Instruments, the Soul-Sword, is stolen, the terrifying Inquisitor arrives to investigate and zooms right in on Jace. How can Clary stop Valentine if Jace is willing to betray everything he believes in to help their father?

In this breathtaking sequel to City of Bones, Cassandra Clare lures her readers back into the dark grip of New York City’s Downworld, where love is never safe and power becomes the deadliest temptation.

Story Rating 3.50
Character Rating 3.50

Audio Rating (not part of the overall rating): 4.50

Audio Specific Review: Narrated by Natalie Moore and she does a fantastic job. She only does book 1 and 2 though so it will be interesting to see what I think of the next one.

First Thought when Finished: Just as annoying as the first one —darn it!

What I Loved: I think the world that Cassandra Clare has created is just downright intriguing and brilliantly crafted. She does a fantastic job of shifting between the now and the “other” world. She does this down to the characters actions and it always felt real. Simon in the last few chapters totally moved into my “love” category. He totally did what was right in the end and that was just plain awesome. I appreciate when a triangle is resolved with someone growing a pair (so to speak).

What I Liked: Jace and his snarky attitude are a bit of a joy to read. He is always very entertaining maybe even when he shouldn’t be snarking off. I also love Luke! Just going to say it, Clary is lucky to have such a strong figure in her life.

What annoyed the heck out of me: I could have said that nicer but honestly the brother/sister storyline with the illusions to more is just downright annoying with a combo of “ick”. I know that it doesn’t go on forever (or that cover on book 5 makes no sense at all) BUT until it is resolved it is distracting from my enjoyment of the books.

Final Thought: This is a well-loved series and for many reason I can see why. I love Cassandra’s writing and story flow. I may not love every story-line but all of them are very readable.

I still haven’t read this series. The more and more that I think about, I’m not sure I will. It sounds interesting and everyone seems to love them but something is holding me back.

I’ve read a couple of these and enjoyed them but, for some reason, they’re just not on the top of my to-buy list! Very enjoyable stories, though.

It sounds good… except for the whole brother/sister thing… I just read a story where the hero/heroine thought they were related, but then found out they are not, so let’s just have sex. Um, okay.

Nice review Felicia! A colleague gave me the first three books in this series, and I gave them to my 13y old stepdaughter last weekend. Am curious what she will think of these books.

Well, I’ll probably be next to last to read these b/c they’re on my TBR pile (Oh, I have City of Bones physically in my pile… must stop buying books!). But after your review and looking at all the fab books I have waiting, this series may fall further behind. Ce la vie…

I am not trying to rain on your parade but the third book was great and it seemed to be the end and then this book four comes out and it sucks! I hated it! I enjoy CC’s world building but I absolutely detest her cliffhanger endings. I am not even going to read book 5 because I just don’t care anymore, the Jace and Clary drama seems to have no end in sight…..

Yeah the brother/sister thing really grossed me out, Ive been wanting to read that Forbidden about the bro and sis love thing, but I have a brother and it just gives me the creeps……ew….EW!

Ive only read the first three books, someday I really need to pick up with the series again…..and check out the prequels….
