When events in her dream start coming true, she heads to the flight’s departure gate. To her shock, she recognizes the man she’d watched die the night before.

Lieutenant Commander Zane Winters comes from a bloodline of elite warriors with psychic abilities. When Zane and two of his platoon buddies arrive at Sea-Tac Airport, he has a vision of his teammates’ corpses. Then she arrives—a leggy blonde who sets off a different kind of alarm.

As Beth teams up with Zane, they discover the hijacking is the first step in a secret cartel’s deadly global agenda and that key personnel within the FBI are compromised. To survive the forces mobilizing against them, Beth will need to open herself to a psychic connection with the sexy SEAL who claims to be her soul mate

My Thoughts on

Listened for Review/Read for Fun (Brilliance/Kindle)
Overall Rating: 3.50
Story Rating: 4.00
Character Rating: 3.25

Audio Rating: 4.00 (not part of the overall rating)

First Thought when Finished: Forged in Fire was one heck of an adrenaline fueled topsy-turvy ride!

Story Thoughts: Forged in Fire was an adrenaline rush that had me on my toes. I really liked the mixing in of “fringe” abilities and non-stop action. Trish managed to pull you in with glimpses of how things could go and then slam you in another direction when something was thwarted. This didn’t always work in our heroes favor and I appreciated the not knowing how it was going to turn out. I will admit the story rating would have been higher but the story was kind of left open-ended. The ending just felt a little to abrupt to me!

Character Thoughts: Forged in Fire is another case of “I was more interested in the characters coming up than the main couple”. Beth just didn’t “WOW” me. She was just too “anti” soul-mates for my taste. While I did appreciate her love of the Romance Novel, I just couldn’t warm up to her. On the other hand, I really loved Zane. He was Alpha to the core. I kept thinking I missed books about his brothers but evidently I didn’t. I think his whole family would be a fascinating read if they are anything like him. Overall, it was the side characters that really got my attention. I can’t wait to read their stories.

Audio Thoughts:

Narrated by Angela Dawe /Length 11 hrs and 24 mins

Angela “freaking” Dawe y’all! Seriously if you haven’t listened to her read The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley, you are missing out. She is one of my favorite narrators and doesn’t let me down in pacing, emotions, and cadence. She seriously probably made me like Beth more than I would have otherwise! A good narrator can do that!

Final Thoughts: I can’t wait for the next book even if I can’t quite figure out when it is coming out!

  1. I totally understand your frustration about the next book…. but are you gonna hit me if I tell you it’s totally worth it? I’m not sure what the official hold up has been with the publication date, but I got to beta read Forged in Ash and I loved it even more than this one.

I’m pretty sure that the January 2014 date is a good one for its release so you don’t have too much longer to wait. 😉 There is still a lot of character play with the supporting crew, but I think the next couple will hold your interest. Cosky is a trip and Kait is a great female lead.

    • Oh good to know! I think I was most frustrated with the open ending…it felt like it was just dropped off. Granted, I have heard that she released an updated version that probably isn’t in the audio. I am really looking forward to the rest of the guys–specifically Mr. I Hate Women 🙂

  2. Commander. Alpha male. With psychic abilities. Great narrator. This is a WIN.

I haven’t listened to Dawes before. I probably need to get out the YA & find her 😀

  3. I do love books with psychics, so this series would have gone on the wishlist if they were not self published … I want paper, not ebook (and not way too expensive paper either!)

  4. It’s always a little bit frustrating when a future lead character or couple is more interesting than the current couple, but at the same time I love it because the anticipation for the future couple’s book is so much fun! Bummer about the abrupt ending, but Zane sounds delicious and that might just be enough for me:)

    • It was super frustrating because it was hard to find information on the upcoming books. I guess the author is switching to self-publishing and had to get back rights (or something). Zane was fantastic and Beth had her moments. She LURVES the BDB!

  5. Angela is the one that narrates the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh. I didn’t really care for her narration of that series at first but she grew on me after few books into the series but she’s still not my favorite. Maybe I should try listen to her do a different book.

    • I didn’t realize she did those too. I went to look up what I thought of her audio there and I liked it. I think I find her voice soothing but I always say–not every narrator works for everyone 🙂 You probably wouldn’t like this one on audio either since I think it is probably closer to her Psy-Changeling narration. The pacing is about the same between the two.

  6. When I see “bloodline of elite warriors with psychic abilities” in the blurb, it’s almost a guarantee that I’ll pick up at least one book in the series. Maybe not this one, though. I do like when one of the people struggles against the ties of love/soulmatehood but when they’re too vociferous for too long, it takes away the fun. Still looks good and yay for a hot, awesome guy!

    • I think this one would be fine if the freaking follow up book was out (or coming). This released in 2012 (early) and the only thing I saw was that there is another one due in 2014. I don’t know that I will stick with it if the release schedule is that slow. It would drive me nuts since the end is sort of open-ended (by sort of–I mean completely)
