Sometimes the dead do tell tales…

1800s. San Antonio, Texas: In room 207 at the Longhorn Saloon, in the long shadow of the Alamo itself, a woman renowned for her beauty was brutally murdered. Her killer was never found.

One year ago: In that same historic room, another woman vanished without a trace. Her blood was everywhere…but her body was never recovered.

Now: In the last month, San Antonio has become a dumping ground for battered bodies. All young women, many of them long missing, almost all forgotten. Until now.

Texas Ranger Logan Raintree cannot sit by and let his city’s most vulnerable citizens be slain. So when he is approached to lead a brand-new group of elite paranormal investigators working the case, he has no choice but to accept the challenge. And with it, his powerful ability to commune with the dead.

Among Logan’s new team is Kelsey O’Brien, a U.S. marshal known for her razor-sharp intuition and a toughness that belies her delicate exterior. Kelsey has been waiting all her life to work with someone who can understand her ability to “see” the past unfolding in the present. Now she has her chance.

Together, Kelsey and Logan follow their instincts to the Alamo and to the newly reopened Longhorn, which once tempted heroes with drink, cards and women. If the spirits of those long-dead Texans are really appearing to the victims before their deaths, only Kelsey and Logan have the skills to find out why. And if something more earthly is menacing the city’s oldest, darkest corners, only they can stop it—before more innocent women join the company of San Antonio’s restless ghosts….

First thought: I really like the new team 🙂

What I Thought of the Case: The Unseen is set in San Antonio, TX and as a Native Texan I had to love it! As a history buff, I loved the setting even more. It was centered around The Alamo and the history of a missing diamond. The killings were very much committed by humans but the ghosts were such a HUGE help in figuring it out. I didn’t quite figure out who did the grisly murders until about half way through. It was just a guess at that point but it ended up being right. Mysteries are best when they keep you guessing 🙂

What I Thought of the Characters: The Unseen is the first book with a new Paranormal Investigation team. We do get to see a few characters from the original series but you could start here without missing a beat. I do like the new team almost as much as the old one. I am sure by the end of Book 4 they will be instilled in my heart. The main characters of The Unseen are Logan and Kelsey. They are both law enforcement but of different branches. Their different unique abilities work well together and I love their chemistry. Another great pairing by Heather Graham.

What I Thought of the Audio: Not to sound like a broken record but Luke Daniels did a wonderful job. I recommend this series on audio! Though if you listen to a lot of audios that he does (which I do) then you will notice some re-use of accents. Sometimes that can make you laugh because that will make cross-series characters. Let’s just say having Oberon act as some of these characters is hysterical. You quickly though get back into your story with just a little grin!

Final Thought: I like this series and think most romantic mystery readers would too!

  1. I’ve read a couple Heather Grahams and she always delivers a good, solid story. I like the history aspect of this one and how the ghosts help out.

  2. Ooooo the narrator is obviously the same guy that does the Iron Druid series then, that would make me laugh too imagining one of the other characters out of their story and in a completely different context! He’s obviously a brilliant narrator though, I really do need to give audiobooks a try!

    • All of her Romantic Suspense run in trilogies or quarters. You can really read each one on it’s own though as the cases are 1 per book. Depending on your type of mystery you could start with Phantom Evil which is a Prequel stand-alone to this whole series!

    • I like (you can’t tell huh) the whole series. The romance is light (not the focus) and the cases are interesting. Plus Luke Daniels does the narration (can’t tell I am a fan girl huh) 🙂

    • It is a great series! I like that she is dividing them up to 4 books in each series then introducing a new team. It means you aren’t stuck starting at the very beginning!
