From Senator Al Franken - #1 bestselling author and beloved SNL alum - comes the story of an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that. This is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.It's a book about our deeply polarized, frequently depressing, occasionally inspiring political culture, written from inside the belly of the beast. In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics.Has Al Franken become a true Giant of the Senate? Franken asks readers to decide for themselves.

Quick Thoughts: Al Franken is my cranium crush (when you really like someone’s brain and what they do with it) but I admit going into this that I was scared if it was to continue. See I have never been a SNL fan so I didn’t know him from those days. I did know him from his Political Satire days a bit. I mostly know him from the Senate. I am a huge fan of his tough but fair questioning.  His balanced and thoughtful attitude about working across party lines. This book gave me everything that I could want from how he got into politics to his struggles in the beginning of his Senate career. I think (if possible) I have a bigger cranium crush on him now! I think for those that are fans of his from his pre-Senate days you will get a bit out of this too. He does spend a good portion of the first part of this book on his SNL/Radio days. I really now understand how he is the way he is and that is the most excellent of things!

  1. I mostly know him from his SNL days and it seemed so far fetched for him to become a politician but he’s done a good job.

  2. I’m glad your cranium crush is bigger than ever now, nice! I actually do remember him from his SNL skit days. I still haven’t read the first book I bought by him, Lies & the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair & Balanced Look at the Right. I bought it when it first came out, but I have a bad habit of forgetting about my non-fiction reads.

  3. I need to grab this book from my library. I really love Al Franken. Watching him interview people for cabinet seats has been great. I agree with you that he asks very tough, but fair questions. I knew of him from SNL, but I’m not a huge fan either (I watch a few skits here and there, but not the show as a whole). Great review.

I really love audiobooks – they are a great way to keep your mind active when driving. Al Franken looks like a super interesting guy, and you are definitely making me want to listen to this audiobook. Thanks!

  5. Al is awesome. Every time I see him though I think,” I am good enough, I am smart enough and gosh darn it people like me.”

My kid told me that this is a great read too. Said it’s his favorite book for this Summer. I’ll definitely listen to this Especially since he narrated it himself.
