A Duke in the Night by Kelly Bowen

Date Read: February 20th 2018

Genre: Historical, Romance

Duke. Scoundrel. Titan of business. August Faulkner is a man of many talents, not the least of which is enticing women into his bedchamber. He’s known—and reviled—for buying and selling companies, accumulating scads of money, and breaking hearts. It’s a reputation he wears like a badge of honor, and one he intends to keep.

Clara Hayward, the headmistress of the Haverhall School for Young Ladies, on the other hand, is above reproach. Yet when she’s reunited with August, all she can think of is the way she felt in his arms as they danced a scandalous waltz ten long years ago. Even though her head knows that he is only back in her life to take over her family’s business, her heart can’t help but open to the very duke who could destroy it for good.

WOW! I have read, loved and kept all of Kelly Bowen’s books, but this one may be her best. August Faulkner was raised in horrible circumstances and didn’t expect to be a Duke. Now, he’s very wealthy, takes care of his sister Anne, and has many businesses under his control. Anne however wishes he’d let her do what she would like to do which is not attending balls. He feels he must be in control of his holdings and his sister due to lacking so many things as a child.

Clara Hayward’s family is not as well off as they once were. She has a school, her sister is an artist and her brother, Lord Strathmore, a doctor. They still have a few ships, but some have been lost at sea. Clara remembers being a wallflower except for the one waltz she had with August.

Anne has applied for the special summer session of Clara’s school that takes place at an estate in Dover. Clara believes August approved until he shows up in Dover to take his sister home. August allows Anne to stay as he will stay in the dower house with Clara’s brother. It’s been ten years since their waltz and Clara is surprised by her reactions to him. He is very attracted to her also.

Clara’s school is not what August expected, but several things occur that make him stay. Clara learns he is the one who bought her school in London and is trying to buy their shipping business. When will enough be enough for him? I have tried not to give away much of this wonderful story as I don’t want to spoil this wonderful book. There are wonderful secondary characters and I believe some will get their own HEAs. I look forward to the rest of this series.
