Winterlong Musical Blog Hop — Books + Songs for Cold Nights
It is officially that time of year when I refuse to leave the couch unless someone hands me a mug of something warm. Which makes it the perfect time for the Winterlong Musical Blog Hop, where we’re all sharing our favorite cold-weather reads paired with the songs that fit them. Genius idea, honestly. I love a theme.
Read #1: Something Snowy & Sweeping
There’s a certain kind of book that just demands a snowstorm outside the window. For me, it’s anything with a big sprawling fantasy world and a quiet emotional core — the kind where the characters are also cold, ideally, so we can suffer together in solidarity. I want frosty breath, fur-lined hoods, and at least one scene next to a fireplace.
Pairs with: Anything by Sufjan Stevens, honestly, but especially the quieter tracks off his Christmas collection. That fragile, tinkly, almost-too-sad-to-bear vibe is exactly the energy.
Read #2: A Romance With a Cabin
Listen. The “snowed in at a cabin” trope is a national treasure. I will read it every single time. Bonus points if there is exactly one bed, a roaring fire, and someone who claims to hate the other person but is conveniently great at chopping wood.
Pairs with: Something with a low, warm acoustic feel. Iron & Wine, early Norah Jones, or that one Joni Mitchell song that makes you stare wistfully out the window.
Read #3: A Re-Read, Always
Winter is re-read season for me. The world outside is too cold and too dark to take a chance on something new — I want a book I already love, where I know exactly which pages to dog-ear and which scenes to savor.
Pairs with: Whatever album you played on repeat the year you first read the book. That’s the rule. I don’t make the rules. (I just made the rule.)
